Mixing It Up

On June 4, KABA held its summer kick-off mixer at Mok Maru Jong Sul Jip in Los Angeles’ Koreatown. KABA attorneys and law students packed the house for an evening of food, drink and festivities. More than 20 students met the attorneys they will soon be joining in the legal community. Lawyers from other Asian American legal associations around Southern California arrived and showed their support for KABA, including members of the Asian Pacific American Bar Association of Los Angeles and the Japanese American Bar Association of Greater Los Angeles.

“The event was a big success,” said board member Kelly Knight. “Many of us haven’t seen each other in months, so it was almost like a mini-reunion.”

“The event was a ton of fun,” added Peter Park, a student at the USC School of Law. “I can’t wait for the next one!”

Lending a Legal Hand

KABA continues to hold monthly legal clinics for the Korean community. The clinic provides free legal information and advice to monolingual and limited-English proficient Koreans, and one-on-one sessions with volunteer attorneys on a first-come, first-serve basis. In operation since 2002, the clinics have become an important cornerstone in KABA’s mission and work in the community. In response to the gentrification of the Los Angeles Koreatown area and the resulting shortage of affordable housing, KABA also recently became involved in a tenants’ rights clinic with the Koreatown Tenants Defense Network.

KABA thanks all the volunteer attorneys and law students who have dedicated countless hours to staffing the clinics, and we seek more volunteer attorneys, especially in the areas of business, immigration and housing law, as well as other volunteers who can help with interpretation and intake. For more information, please e-mail jlee@lafla.org.
